Lisa Shanahan is an award-winning writer of picture books and fiction for young people. Some of her well-loved books include Gordon’s Got a Snookie, illustrated by Wayne Harris and Bear and Chook and Daddy’s Having a Horse, illustrated by Emma Quay. Her first novel for teenagers, My Big Birkett was published to critical acclaim in Australia, where it was shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers and in the United States, where it was a New York Public Library Best Book for the Teen Age. Her picture book, Bear and Chook by the Sea, illustrated by Emma Quay, won the CBCA Book of the Year for Early Childhood in 2010 and her picture book collaboration with the illustrator Gus Gordon, Big Pet Day, was the Speech Pathology Book of the Year for 5-8 year-old children in 2015. Her latest book, the middle-grade novel The Grand, Genius Summer of Henry Hoobler, received the Queensland Literary Award for children’s fiction in 2017 and was recently shortlisted in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards for Younger Readers in 2018. Her latest picture book, the delightfully quirky Hark, It’s Me, Ruby Lee, illustrated by Binny Talib, was also shortlisted as a CBCA Book of the Year for Early Childhood. Lisa lives in Sydney, with her husband and their three sons and one scruffy spoodle. She relishes writing for young people and is incredibly grateful to be doing what she loves.
